Summer School 2017

Language Centre

The Language Centre was established at the University in 2007. Dr. Leila Luukko-Vinchenzo is the Head of the Centre, which has developed and expanded significantly since its foundation.

In its first year the Centre catered for approximately 700 students and by 2012/13 that number had doubled. The continuously enhanced programme portfolio now includes courses from 1 month to 1 year, for almost all levels, and with many start dates throughout the year.

If you cannot find a course that suits your needs, please bear in mind that we can always design courses for individuals or groups as well. Tuition is carried out by a growing number of highly qualified and experienced lecturers, and many of our courses include excursions to local places of interest such as Chester and Liverpool, as well as the beautiful scenery of North Wales. The centre can be contacted by emailing languages.foreign@glyndwr.ac.uk

We are proud to serve Wrexham Glynd┼Ár University students and staff, the general public as well as corporate and commercial clients in and around Wrexham, North East Wales and beyond. In fact our English language programmes attract participants from across the world.

Pre-Sessional English Course

The Language Centre at Wrexham Glyndwr University runs pre-sessional programmes for students who need to upgrade their English language skills and knowledge in order to satisfy the University’s English language entry criteria for undergraduate and postgraduate studies. The intensive courses consist of 23-25 hours of classes per week, and in addition of plentiful guided independent study/homework.

The length of the language programme required is determined by the applicant’s current English language qualifications and the entry criteria respectively. The pre-sessional courses aim to fill the existing gap with courses of either 5, 10, 18 or 30 weeks of length.

The modules on offer aim to enable students to further enhance their existing skills in English in order to achieve improved accuracy and general proficiency. The main focus is the further development of linguistic skills and acquisition of socio-cultural awareness with particular attention to preparing students for the appropriate level in their final assessment to satisfy the entry criteria. At the end of the modules, students will have improved all four skills (speaking, reading, listening and writing) to an appropriate level and they should be able to communicate according to the level in most academic and social situations, both in receptive and productive skills.  As competent users of English, students will use, understand and have generally effective command of fairly complex language, despite some inaccuracies. By achieving the required pass mark in each skill and overall in the final assessment, students will fulfill the University’s English language entry criteria for undergraduate or postgraduate studies respectively.
